Does anyone have any good resources for becoming more knowledgable about BJJ refereeing? I was asked to ref at a tournament recently, at it was the first time I've really had to ref a match. I feel like I did ok, and I'm familiar with all the basics, but I'd like to learn more and make myself a little more comfortable. I was probably more nervous refereeing than if I were actually competing. Are there any good resources, particularly anything online that might help me out?
my best advice would be to familiarize yourself with the rules of the tournament you are refereeing . I have ref'd some tournaments and i also train bjj but rules differ from competition to competition(ie-naga, grapplers quest, pan ams). So talk to the person running the tournament obtain a copy of the rules(in advance) and go over them and ask him also if you have any questions that arent covered in the rules.
Jon,
Andrew Smith (Goat Furry) runs a refereeing session/certification a couple times a year in Richmond, VA. It lasts for the full day and it's free. I'm planning to attend one of them. The last I talked to him, he's was going to have one near February. He's on jiujitsushare. I'm sure he can help you with any questions.
