if you have good posture, they should not be able to suck you into them with the lapels. At best they can pull themself up to you using the lapels. If they do that you have an issue with hand placement. one on their lapels and one in hip control should keep them on their back.
When they can't break your posture, they will have to move to a different attack strategy, something like a kimura. If they want to successfully attack they will have to open the guard at some point.
You should be able to identify what attack they are going for..i.e. armbar, triangle, finish the kimura, omoplata, etc.
There is a way to counter every one of those. The guy that runs out of counters first , loses.
If you cannot identify the attack, then you are just going to have to keep rolling until you get an idea of what they are doing.
You're going to get tapped alot but eventually you figure out what works.

When I'm in someone closed guard the first thing I fight for is posture. If you can get a grip on their lapels with your dominant hand you can stiff arm them to keep their back flat on the mat. That will prevent themfrom coming up and breaking you down. Recently in a tournament I had someone in my closed guard and he caught me with and ezekiel choke. It was really tight and I had to tap. It was the first time anyone had ever threatened me with an attack while being in my closed guard. Since then I've used it a few times in training, some with success and even it doesn't work they'll have to defend it which usually means letting go of their grips. If you haven't seen it you can find videos online showing the technique. But I would l say fight for posture and try to pass as soon as you can.

It seems as though when I stay in someones closed guard they suck me into them using lapel control, and with closed guard they have the upper hand. I would like to mount offense while trying to pass closed guard. anyone provide any insight?

well you could just wait for them to try an attack, then they almost have to open their guard. I guess then we would discuss passing the open guard.
It is a very hard discussion to have through typing.
it sounds silly but youtube has tons of clips for guard passing.
you've got smash passes
stack passes, etc.
this is something you play with until you get 3 or 4 you can use comfortably and confidently

Does anyone have tips for passing the closed guard. A fellow student showed me the elbow press on the inner thigh but I dont like it because one can just posture up on someone trying to pass like that.

Hey Jonathan, thx bro!
Funnily enough I've been back hitting the Thai myself - been doing it for like 15 yrs. Went back to train myself and also do some of my Fighter's Mind™ Coaching with a Champ Thai Boxer who had an upcoming fight!

Keep on training bro!

Congrats "Silverback", I so very much look forward to getting that 3rd white stripe added to my white belt. It's just a matter of time. And I'm sure adding a couple more training days to my Bjj training wouldn't slow the process down any either. As it stands I train Bjj Tues/Thurs. and Muay Thai on Mon/Weds. I love them both!

Yay!
Got 3rd white stripe on my white belt last week! W00t!
Finding training 3 x per week makes all the difference in upping my game a little.
not getting subbed so much, and starting to tag a few people too, without trying to use my weight strength in the rolling.

loving the bjj!
